Heat Pumps

Extra Low Temperature Heat Pumps

How do they work?

What are mini-split heat pumps?

Heat pump technology has been used for decades in common household refrigerators and traditional air conditioning units. They work by transferring energy from one place to another using a refrigeration cycle to extract heat from the air and move it indoors for heating, or vice versa for cooling.

Advanced Technology

Mini-split heat pumps are ductless two-way air conditioning systems that work to both heat and cool your interior space. The system consists of an outdoor compressor unit and one or more indoor air handling units - called "heads" - that connect via refrigerant line sets.

Today's heat pumps now have the ability to harness heat from the outside air down to -22º F, which finally makes them viable heating systems for our northern climate! Plus, the inverter-driven compressor allows for variable-speed capacity which conserves energy by allowing the motor to ramp up or slow down to maintain a desired temperature.

What are Mini-Splits Good For?

  • Excellent for applications without forced air heating and cooling
  • Replacing inefficient and costly electric baseboard heaters, propane & oil
  • Lowering cost to run cooling
  • Separate areas can be independently heated and cooled, allowing for customized comfort, efficiency and savings

Main Benefits of Heat Pumps

  • 300-400% efficient
  • Heating, cooling, and dehumidification in a single unit
  • Whisper quiet
  • Low operation costs
  • Zero emissions
  • Easy installation

Rebates and Credits

Wisconsin has officially launched the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebate (HEAR) Program, funded by $74.5 million from the federal Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). It provides instant rebates to low- and moderate-income households for energy-efficient appliances, reducing monthly energy costs. The HEAR Program joins the Home Efficiency Rebate (HOMES) Program, offering comprehensive energy-saving rebates. Wisconsin is among the first states to roll out both initiatives.

HEAR Income-Based Rebate Recap:

Households up to 80% of Area Median Income (AMI) are eligible for rebates up to 100% of project costs, with a maximum of $14,000.

Households between 80% and 150% of AMI: Eligible for rebates covering up to 50% of project costs, also capped at $14,000.

Eligible Upgrades and Maximum Rebates (bold are services offered by Ethos):

  • ENERGY STAR Electric Heat Pump for Space Heating: Up to $8,000.
  • Electrical Load Service Center (Electrical Panel): Up to $4,000.
  • Electrical Wiring: Up to $2,500.
  • ENERGY STAR Electric Heat Pump Water Heater: Up to $1,750.
  • ENERGY STAR Electric Heat Pump Clothes Dryer: Up to $840.
  • ENERGY STAR Electric Stove, Cooktop, or Range: Up to $840.
  • Insulation, Air Sealing, and Ventilation: Up to $1,600.
